I love A&W because it reminds me of family trips when I was younger. Yummy food served fast, root beer floats too big to hold, friendly waitstaff. It's still the same in Hales Corners. The building could use a little work inside, but they are slowly making changes. Just a few years ago they installed new booths! There is also a nicely graded gravel side lot for additional parking. I have been here off and on for years but they always treat me like family. Everyone is so friendly and the food is ready in no time at all. I love to sit and observe the locals sometimes, they have some interesting stories to overhear. Plus I can catch up on all the HC gossip! Due to its location on HWY 100 it can be a trick to access because of the traffic. However it's worth the effort. And stop in for breakfast! Many don't know it's offered here and everything is just as good as home made.

THAT RELISH THAT GLOWS LIKE ANTIFREEZE COOLANT - love it! My wife just opened an insurance agency in Hales Corners so I've gotten to know the area. We went through the drive thru and got a few hot dogs and a root beer. The hot dogs were covered in afore mentioned un-natural relish and were tasty. Salty nitrate-laden hot dogs with sugary sweet root beer for the win. I got hot dogs and my dog was hanging out the window when I got them. The girl working the window said dogs make her happy. Hot dogs make me happy. LET'S TRADE! COOL RETRO INSPIRED WEBSITE: awrestaurants.com

The food is exactly what you should expect to get for cheap food. The burger was good. I had a freeze and it was a nice treat. What do you expect for $10. They were accurate in their advertising and presentation for the price. They are fast, and the staff was kind. Great place for kids.

All my years of living in the area and I have never eaten at A&W. I remember going through the drive thru once or twice with friends to get some fried junk but never really ate an actual sandwich there. Met some friends there the other night for a bite and to hang out and chat. Menu has a pretty good selection for a fast food type place. I had a grilled chicken sandwich and it was surprisingly good since I am kind of a chicken sandwich snob. The service was great and I cannot believe how fast everything comes out. We ordered and it seemed to be only minutes later we received our food. WOW!!! We sat there for a couple of hours talking and then went outside. We proceeded to talk in the parking lot until they shut the lights off on us. It was 8pm on a Saturday night. We all laughed because we joked "We closed A&W" (is there a bumper sticker that says that?) I will definitely be back to try more. I also heard they have a great breakfast too. Family owned and very friendly.

If you're going for anything root beer related, A&W is a five-star kind of place. The rest of the food is... well, like a diner whose real specialty is a soda. I recommend the grilled chicken sandwich, or a chili cheese dog.

This A & W is definitely different then the ones I remember as a kid. No Speakers or trays hooked to your car door. It is a combination of fast food and sit down place. They have a counter right when you enter, but that is for to go orders and customers paying as they leave, so it is a little congested as you walk in. We figured out what was going on, grabbed our own menus and found a table. Within seconds a waitress appeared and took our order. I chose the Mushroom/ Swiss burger with grilled onions, Fries and a Chocolate Shake. My friend ordered a Bacon Cheese Burger, Fries and a Root Beer. Our food appeared as quickly as our waitress! On real plates too! The burgers were good and the fries were fantastic! My shake was good, but nothing spectacular. I was at A& W....Why didn't I get a Root Beer? Service was amazingly fast and friendly. I think the owner checked on us twice. They are wheelchair accessible, but be aware that the parking lot is a little beat up and the restaurant itself is small and could be hard to navigate alone.

They still serve the fantastic root beer in mugs. This is a fun little diner, type place. The service is fast and the food is served piping hot. The fries are crunchy and delicious. I also enjoy the ice cream and cheese curds.

2.5 Stars rounding up because, hey, A&W is a dying franchise breed. This A&W on Hwy 100 in Hales Corners looks updated on the outside, but inside, it's like a George Webb's circa 1985 (I should know, I worked at one back then), and it really needs updating. Service was fast, and fairly friendly. The menu is standard A&W, fried food, burgers, chicken sandwiches. I love their onion rings, but the menu doesn't wow. The root beer is served in frosty mugs, but the rest is just lackluster diner food. There are way better A&Ws, like the ones with the car ports and the trays hanging off your window. But then again, a lame A&W is better than a great _ (Insert George Webb's or another greasy spoon name).

This A & W may not be as nice as the ones in Portage and Wautoma, but still good food, great service and friendly people. To me, combo prices are a bit high and the fact that you have to pay for a refill, kind of surprized me. In Wautoma, not only do they refill your Root Beers, but they offer you a to-go cup as well. In all tho, I am glad there is still an A & W in Milwaukee county since the one on 27th st. closed a few years back. My most memorable A & W memories while growing up in West Allis was Flemmings A & W on 78th and Greenfield.

Not a drive-in A&W like the ones of old, but they still serve the same great food and root beer. Root beer is the main thing here, I don't know if it tastes like the root beer of the 60's, but it still tastes like it did in 1984. That's all that's important to me. That's not to say they only do old things, they make a root beer blended float they call a "freeze" that's heavenly. The food is your standard custard stand fare, but the cheese curds here are the real deal. The burgers, dogs and fries are worth it too. I will always return, if only for the root beer.

This locally-owned A&W is a full-service sit-down restaurant, not just a traditional A&W root beer/ice cream stand. Many locals have made this their breakfast spot of choice, in heavy competition with the Webb's across the street. A&W offers relatively inexpensive fare, including a "breakfast special" of two eggs, sausage or bacon, and toast all for $2.99 (previously $2.49), and the service is really fast, possibly due in part to the fact that the owner is usually in the restaurant. Lunch and dinner offers a full array of A&W menu items. For fans of A&W root beer, be sure to ask to have your meal upgraded to the large, where they'll bring out one of the largest mugs you've ever seen, filled to the top with root beer. The staff is attentive and very friendly. Having visited almost weekly for a long time, of course I've seen a goof or two. Since I read the paper while I'm there, one morning, I noticed I had gotten through the first section of the paper, and didn't have my food yet (it typically arrives much too quickly, like while I'm reading Page 1, which vaguely annoys me). Thinking this unusual, I kept quiet and it got to about a half-hour since I had arrived, when one of the longtime waitresses came up, somewhat flustered and extremely apologetic, and told me that somehow my ticket hadn't gotten to the kitchen. I told her flat out that this was fine with me, since I preferred to get some reading in before my food came. Now, I'm not *sure* of this, but it seems to me that when she takes my order now, my food often takes a little longer to arrive than it used to. It could be my imagination, I guess. For whatever reason, the owner has opposed accepting credit cards, and this is one of an exceedingly small number of restaurants that does not accept cards.

Dear God, Where has A & W's original recipe root beer gone? It was my favorite, and they used to serve it in a frosty mug. Yogi Bear was their mascot. You would call your waitress by a telephone at your booth, and she would bring your root beer order shortly thereafter. These were all signs of your existence. Where have they gone? Lemme know. Sincerely, A One-Time Milwaukee Youth

What did I honestly expect from A&W? Something different from the normal fast food grind. It was certainly different enough for me. That chili dog may become a guilty pleasure, but don't hate me for not liking their rootbeer. Sprecher is so much better and has ruined me on all other brands. Moving on. The Papa Burger was pretty legit too. I could definitely go for another one of those. Gosh, I can't believe how long it's been since I've actually eaten at an A&W! Fries? Nope, they don't really cut through the fast food market. Sorry, not sorry. I'll give this place a gold star on a wet surface... you know it's there, but it's not meant to last forever.
